Taormina with Etna

This Carl Rottmann view of the small town Taormina on Sicily is unusual. The position is far away from the city and the Greek Theatre, which usually gives off the fore of this famous view. Due to the elevated position the viewer’s gaze will wander through a barely unmeasurable space continuum that blends imperceptibly with each other different image planes. We can’t almost see some narrative elements like the figures in the foreground, because the main subject attracts our eyes. The brightly-lit, snow-capped volcanic cone of Mount Etna.
But actually, this image is mostly criticized as unfavorable, because it appeared in the shapes too vague and fleeting, and have also little truth to the nature.
You can see this painting in the Neue Pinakothek Munich.
