The Red Cloud

Renato Guttuso was all his life a political person. In 1940 he joined to the Communist Party and later joined to the anti-fascist resistance. In the painting, he belonged in the west to the representatives of Socialist Realism, where he remained quite critical to the Soviet doctrines.
On a window sill are various objects: a stove top with griddle and fried egg, a white bread, stale paint tubes, a pistol, books, a ram’s skull, a fork, and finally two nutshells. These are all personal items and associations of the artist. The ram’s head is a reference to the Spanish king, but also in the first place to Pablo Picasso, with whom Guttuso was a close friend for many years.
In the background, a red cloud moves into the picture, which occupies nearly the entire screen. Guttuso himself spoke to the emergence of the image that went back to an experienced sunset, which appeared to him like a flag of hope and freedom.
