Le petit Lange

The French painter Édouard Manet have become famous with his realistic but picturesque pointed portraits. “Le petit Lange” shows us a frontal full-length of a five year old boy. It is shown life-size, waiving any decorative accessory. The boy stands astride, dressed in a black Sunday suit and wearing a hat on his head. In his hand he holds a toy and a stick, which is typical for this time.
His style is sketchy at all differentiation in the monochrome color values, only the child’s face is drawn in more detail. The painter has worked out full cheeks, large dark eyes, the play of light on the features with a finer brush. On the other hand, the background has a brown surface, which brightens around the boy’s head. Here is the light collected in order to frame his face almost like a saint rail.
This unpretentiously, yet haunting portrait of boy wins through the painterly treatment of expressive power and shows us Manet as a master of chiaroscuro painting.
