Le Souffleur à la lampe

Light is the theme of this picture, which is lively with strong contrasts of lightness and darkness. The boy is blowing on a glowing branch to light his little oil lamp, which he keeps at a bar. The wick isn’t still burning, but alone the lighting of the fire in the air stream makes boy’s face visible. Without its activity, the picture would be completely dark. The work also makes its own conditions on the subject: “There can’t be any form without light.” Leonardo da Vinci even said.

The paintings by Georges de La Tour are most fascinating of a strictness, which is strengthened by artistic lighting. The mysterious darkness surrounds the few motives and directs the light on certain details. He is perhaps the most decided follower of Caravaggio, who had initiated a generation earlier in Rome with this exciting way.

La Tour measures his presentation also with the ancient artists like Lycius, Antiphilus Philiscus, whose works with similar themes have remained through the descriptions of Plinius.
